- Five Kiesewetter Wise attorneys volunteered their time coaching five local Shelby County high school mock trial teams. Attorneys Lisa Lichterman Leach, Kimberly Brown-Gibbs, and Eileen Kuo coached two teams, the Red team and the Gold team, from St. George’s. William A. Buckley, III coached the mock trial team from Ridgeway, and Nicole H. Bermel coached two teams from White Station, the Gray team and the Green team. Both St. George’s and White Station went on to compete in the Shelby County Regional semifinals. White Station won the state championship and will represent Tennessee in the national mock trial tournament in Philadelphia in May. - Jay W. Kiesewetter has been elected as a Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation. Mr. Kiesewetter was inducted at the Foundation’s annual dinner in Nashville on January 15, 2010.
- Paul E. Prather and Robert D. Meyers have been elected as Fellows in the Litigation Council of America. The Litigation Council of America is a trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one half of one percent of all lawyers in America. Fellows are selected based on both effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation, both at trial and appellate levels and on superior ethical reputation.
- Robert D. Meyers has been reappointed as chairman of the government liability committee for Defense Research Institute, an international organization of attorneys who specialize in defending civil litigation. The reappointment marks the beginning of Meyers’ second consecutive year as chairman of the committee. Mr. Meyers is also the committee chair for DRI’s Civil Rights Seminar in January 2010.
- Paul Prather and Alex Boals have blogged regarding Fair Labor Standards Act issues related to adjustments to salaries for exempt employees on the internet blog of the Wage and Hour Defense Institute. - Jonathan Kaplan and Paul Prather spoke at LEAP’s 6th Annual Labor and Employment Law Advanced Practices Symposium in April 2010 in San Diego, California. On April 22, 2010, Mr. Kaplan spoke about unions in the workplace, including the latest trends, organizing techniques and key legislative and regulatory developments. On April 23, 2010, Mr. Prather spoke about legal issues associated with employment-related promises and managing employee expectations through communication.
- On March 5, 2010, Robert Meyers served as a moderator at the ABA's National Trends and Emerging Issues in Workers' Compensation program on the topic “ADA/FMLA/WC - How Has the Bermuda Triangle Been Affected by the ADAAA and the over 750 Pages of Revised FMLA Regulations?”
- On March 3, 2010, Alex Boals, William Buckley and Lisa Leach spoke at the Fundamentals of Employment Law Conference presented by Sterling Education Services in Memphis. Lisa Leach and William Buckley spoke on the topic, “Hiring & Terminating Employees in the Current Economy,” and Alex Boals spoke on the topic “Compensation Issues Under FLSA / Wage and Hour."
- On January 9, 2010, Steve Hymowitz presented a speech on significant state law developments with respect to the employment relationship, for the Colorado Bar Association’s National CLE Conference in Vail, Colorado.
- Steven W. Hymowitz presented a paper on hot topics in wage hour law, for the National Employment Law Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 10, 2009.
- Sylvia R. Adams coordinated the presentation of the Memphis Bar Association’s annual continuing legal education program on Labor and Employment Law, which was hosted at the University of Memphis on December 4, 2009.
- Steven W. Likens presented a session at the Memphis Bar Association’s annual continuing legal education program on Labor and Employment Law, hosted at the University of Memphis on December 4, 2009, regarding Drafting and Enforcing Restrictive Covenants along with the Honorable Chancellor Arnold Goldin.
- Steve Hymowitz, Paul Prather and Tanja Thompson participated in the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law Annual Conference in Washington, D.C, which was held November 4-7, 2009. Mr. Prather presented closing arguments in a Mock Presentation of a Summary Jury Trial. Mr. Hymowitz made a presentation regarding retaliatory discharge claims under various federal statutes, juror perceptions of employers with respect to retaliatory discharge and managing employees who have made both internal and external workplace complaints, to limit the risks of successful retaliation claims being brought. Ms. Thompson delivered a presentation entitled, “As the Pendulum Swings: The Role of Precedent in National Labor Relations Board Decisions.”
